Job Description 
Position Title: Yard Supervisor & Equipment Team Lead 

Position Purpose: 
1. Provide primary supervision for all Milton yard
2. Provide support for Yard Supervisor North Milton yard. 
3. Provide direction, day-to-day responsibilities of the Equipment Coordinators. Report performance issues to the Operations Supervisor, Canada 
4. Monitor and enforce all policies and procedures for all client Drivers, Outside Carriers and Vendors. Report all issues and challenges to Operations Supervisor, Canada 
5. Accurately and rapidly resolve issues and help mitigate delays 
6. To ensure accurate, effective, and responsible use of equipment 
7. Ensure accurate reporting of all incidents that occur in the yards 
8. Identify and recommend all required or additional training to Operations Supervisor, Canada 
9. Participate in and conduct driver training as directed. 
10. Ensure completion of yard checks as required by Dispatch, min of every 2 hours or as requested 
11. Monitor yards for any safety concerns and addressing them with Operations Manager, Canada for resolution 
12. Ensure all equipment meets MTO & DOT safety & Compliance Requirements 
13. Oversee the management of yard capacity for client equipment 

Accountability: 
1. The Yard Supervisor & Equipment Team Lead is accountable to and supervised by the Operations Supervisor, Canada. 
2. In the absence of the Operations Supervisor, Canada you will report to the Assistant General Manager, Canada. 

Detailed responsibilities and expected results:
 
1) Ensure proper Yard Supervision by; 

  • Monitor job performance of Equipment Coordinators, yard staff, shunters and provide coaching or initiate disciplinary actions or training required to Operations Supervisor, Canada 
  • Monitor and enforce all policies and procedures for and client Drivers, Outside Carriers and Vendors. Report all issues and challenges to Operations Supervisor, Canada 
  • Oversee the day-to-day of equipment coordinators in the Hadfield yard 
  • Ensure the completion of minor repairs to all types of equipment ie. marker light, checking engine oil levels on reefers and/or any other minor repairs that can be completed in the yard 
  • Oversee timely monitoring of the reefers to make sure they are running properly and always remain fueled. 
  • Verify inspections of all inbound trailers for cleanliness, load bars and fuel level are being completed 
  • Monitor Drivers and manage the yard and placement of equipment and ensure spotting is initiated as needed. 
  • Make certain that inspection of brakes for proper adjustment is completed daily. 
  • Oversee the completion of monthly regular safety audits on all equipment 
  • Make sure yard checks are completed as required, minimum every two hours or as requested 
  • Ensure all personnel are wearing required PPE while in the yards 
  • Spot check Driver’s pre-trips, post-trips, load securement and truck cleanliness 
  • Coordinate with all necessary departments to investigate accidents and identify root cause of damages and contribution to prevention methods 
  • Report maintenance and repair needs and coordinate transportation for completion of equipment repairs 
  • Conduct regular safety audits on all equipment 
  • Identifying any safety hazards or items that need to be addressed and report to Operations Supervisor, Canada 
  • Ensure proper maintenance of the yards including container & garbage disposal to always be kept neat and tidy 

2) Ensure proper maintenance and accurate documentation of all equipment by: 
  • Closely monitor Equipment Inspections for conformity and potential equipment repairs 
  • Advise drivers to perform repairs or move trucks or trailers for maintenance as needed 
  • Investigate and assess all reported equipment defects, and initiate repairs as per policies 
  • Liaise with Dispatch/vendors to arrange for maintenance, spare vehicles and ensure repairs are completed 
  • Ensure proper reporting of new or returned equipment to Michigan, while keeping up to date records 
  • Ensure collection of and accurate reporting of mileage as required by Safety & Compliance within expected time frames
  • Support dispatch on ELD software and trailer tracking 
  • Oversee the reporting of accidents to ensure proper procedure and maintenance of records 
  • Investigation of damages ensuring proper reporting and progressive discipline as required 
  • Oversee Container and ordering of driver supplies 
  • Ensuring all trucks and trailers are inspected every 90 days 
  • Monitor and report any driver safety and compliance concerns to dispatch manager 

3) Contribute to Driver Training and Recruiting by: 
  • Conducting Road Tests as required 
  • Conduct Driver Training to correct identified performance issues 
  • Liaise with Operations Supervisor, Canada to determine drivers requiring mandatory/elective training 
  • Provide specific driver training for all new hires, and for existing drivers. 

4) Other Duties: 

  • Performing other duties as assigned from time to time by the management team 
  • Contribute to improvements i.e., processes, procedures, and policies. 
  • Provide support to Yard Supervisor 
  • Occasional driving as required 

Qualifications: 
  • Working knowledge in the transportation industry 
  • Working knowledge of equipment including tractors and trailers 
  • Ability to multi-task, and prioritize in a fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to provide corrective discipline while maintaining a positive working environment 
  • Comfortable in a setting which includes office staff, associates and drivers 
  • Ability to listen, speak and communicate effectively, often in some state of distress. 

Other Requirements: 
  • Must hold a valid AZ license 
  • Minimum 2 years’ verifiable AZ experience 
  • Minimum 2 years verifiable Supervisor experience within transportation industry 
  • Must be able to work in fast-paced, multi-dimensional and highly demanding office environment 
  • Ability to provide after hours and weekend support when necessary 
  • Reliable personal vehicle 

Pay scale is as follows which depends on verified experience:

 
  • 2-4 years: $24.75/HR 
  • 5-7 years: $25.25
  • 7-9 years: $26.25 
  • 10-14 years: $26.75 
  • 15+ years: $27.75
